This New Coffee Has the Same Antioxidant Benefits as Red Wine

A University of New Hampshire chemist says he has invented coffee that has similar antioxidant benefits as a glass of wine

Combining the taste and benefits of your favorite drinks… how can you say no?

Who knew that there was a way to further improve the benefits of our necessitated morning drink, beyond caffeine?A University of New Hampshire chemist has created a coffee varietal that has just as many antioxidants as wine by infusing high-quality Arabic coffee with resveratrol, the chemical found in wine that has heart-healthy antioxidant effects. The resulting product is CoffVee: the coffee that makes you feel almost as good as a glass of wine.

Glenn Miller, who founded Vera Roasting Company, claims that each cup of his coffee (which comes in Colombian and dark French roast) contains the same amount of antioxidants as a glass of wine. Vera Roasting Company officially launched on December 8.

Miller developed the process for adding resveratrol to coffee in his kitchen. Originally he applied the process to both water and tea, but eventually settled on coffee.

“We think we’re on the verge of making the transformation of the coffee industry,” Miller told the Portsmouth Herald.

Here&aposs a quick breakdown to explain:

  • Not-so-healthy eating habits irritate the body, triggering initial low-level inflammation. And unlike "good" inflammation that heals the body and then goes away, this type sticks around, making the body more susceptible to disease.
  • When it comes to heart disease, this low-grade inflammation increases levels of LDL or "bad" cholesterol, encouraging fatty deposits to form in arteries. This gradually narrows the passageway for blood it&aposs why high blood pressure is a common early sign of heart disease.
  • Other lifestyle factors like inactivity, stress, weight gain, and a lack of sleep exacerbate this low-level of inflammation, driving heart disease progression, increasing artery buildup, and boosting the risk of heart attack and stroke.
